Elastic residence is a gallery space for projects and durational performance. It was established in autumn 2004 and is situated in a house built in 1779 in Whitechapel, London. This is an artist run space aimed at giving artists direct access to exhibition opportunities.
Deej Fabyc and Joanna Callaghan manage the space with a board that includes Simeon Nelson, Richard Niman and Dolores Sanchez. Deej Fabyc works in Live art and performance installation. Joanna Callaghan, an Australlian arist originally from new castle living in London for 9 years, is a photographer, film maker and a performance artist. Simeon Nelson works between sculpture, installation, digital art-forms and public projects. Richard Niman at 72 is a sculptor and performing artist.
Deej bought an old 5 bedroom house for art activities four years ago. Later her friends joined in bringing different expertise and experience to the collective. This living and work space turned gallery, exhibits mainly in the front room; sometimes taking over the entire building. The Elastic has already given opportunities to nearly 40 artists from around the world to curate their work and has developed a committed and growing audience. Invited artists have been from Belgium, New York, Germany, Denmark, Tokyo, Iran and Australia. It aims to put on approximately nine exhibitions per year.

The current exhibition is EMPTY: A photographic work by Joanna Callaghan. Inspired by Camus’ quote: ‘determining to live in the absurd is simultaneously awareness and rejection of death’ Joanna finds beauty and liberation in the absurd. Joanna’s work looks at the depression: ‘how the world looks when one is depressed, and in particular how that world looks to one who wants to understand it.’
